Texas History Essay Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Sons of the Republic of Texas
Introduction
This essay contest invites graduating high school seniors to examine and write about Texas history. Submissions should demonstrate thoughtful research and an appreciation for how past events and people contributed to the state we know today.
Eligibility
- Open to graduating seniors from any accredited high school.
- Students enrolled in History, Government, or English courses are especially encouraged to enter.
- Up to three essays will be chosen as winners, provided the entries meet the judges’ standards.
Purpose
The contest seeks to inspire students to investigate the distinctive character of Texas and its early settlers. Entrants should consider the pioneer determination displayed on the frontier, the strategies used to overcome hardships, and the lasting effects of those efforts on present-day Texas. The program is intended to encourage young people to think critically about civic responsibility at local, state, national, and international levels as they prepare for future leadership.
Topic
Each year participants are asked to submit an essay that demonstrates knowledge of Texas history and analyzes its significance in the development of the state.
Submission Requirements and Rules
- Detailed rules are available on the application form that must be downloaded.
- Entrants must submit five printed copies of the essay and one digital copy on CD.
- Manuscripts must conform to either the Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian’s Manual for Writers. Examples of endnotes and a bibliography are provided in the application materials.
- All factual material must be drawn from reputable published sources (books or magazines). Authors and publishers of those sources must be properly credited.
Judging Criteria
Judges will evaluate submissions based on:
- Thoroughness and accuracy of historical research,
- Originality of ideas and clarity of expression, and
- Overall organization and presentation.
Awards and Recognition
The three top essays, if judged worthy, will be declared winners. Winners will be honored and receive their awards from the Sons of the Republic of Texas during the annual San Jacinto Celebration in Houston. Prizes will be awarded as scholarships to the college of each winner’s choice or, alternatively, paid directly to the student.
