Kansas State Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Kansas Board of Regents
Kansas State Scholarship — Overview
The Kansas State Scholarship helps financially eligible Kansas high school seniors who are among the top-performing graduates and have been designated as State Scholars. Designation is limited to roughly the top 40–50% of students who complete the Kansas Scholars Curriculum; the exact number of designees may vary with available state funding.
Who is eligible
To qualify to apply for this scholarship you must, during your senior year of high school in Kansas:
- Have completed the Kansas Scholars Curriculum and received a certificate or other notification confirming completion; AND
- Have been officially designated as a Kansas State Scholar by the Kansas Board of Regents and received notification of that designation.
Designation is determined using an index that combines your ACT composite score and your seventh-semester GPA. All applicants must file the FAFSA and the State of Kansas Student Aid Application each year to be considered.
How to apply
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at fafsa.gov.
- Submit the State of Kansas Student Aid Application at https://sfa.kansasregents.gov/.
- Applications for the State Scholarship must be submitted by July 1.
Award amounts, renewal, and requirements
- Designated State Scholars may receive up to $1,000 per academic year ($500 per semester). Award eligibility is determined by financial need according to the Federal Methodology (using FAFSA data) and by the availability of state funds.
- The scholarship may be renewed for up to four undergraduate years (or five years for students enrolled in an approved five-year program).
- To receive funding in any semester, scholars must be enrolled at least half-time (minimum 12 credit hours per semester), maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and demonstrate financial need.
- Recipients will not be notified by the Kansas Board of Regents directly; your college will inform you if you are eligible and funding is sent to the institution in early August.
- Students must reapply for the scholarship each academic year. A student who does not qualify for funding in one year may become eligible in a later year, so annual application is required to determine current eligibility.
State Scholar designation steps
To be considered for designation as a Kansas State Scholar you should:
1. Take the ACT by December of your senior year.
2. Complete the Kansas Scholars Curriculum in high school.
- Your high school counselor or registrar will typically report KSC completion to the Kansas Board of Regents (this reporting usually occurs between February and April).
3. Graduate during the 2026–2027 academic year.
4. Be selected as a Kansas State Scholar by the Kansas Board of Regents based on the designation index.
Each year approximately 5,000 seniors complete the Kansas Scholars Curriculum; roughly the top half (about 2,500 students) are designated as Kansas State Scholars, depending on funding levels.
