John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship Fund
Intro
Per the will of the late Anna Lee Stacey, a trust has been established to support the education of young men and women who intend to pursue art as a profession. The award created by this trust is named The John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship Fund.
Eligibility
- Open to U.S. citizens, male or female, single or married, without regard to race, creed, or color.
- Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years of age.
- Applicants should be skilled in and committed to the classical/conservative tradition in fine art; only those devoted to this approach should apply.
Purpose and scope
The scholarship’s stated purpose, as set forth in the Staceys’ will, is to encourage excellence in the study of form, color, drawing, painting, design, and technique—specifically in work that clearly shows an affinity with the classical tradition. The will limits the award to the fine arts of painting and drawing; other media are not acceptable as primary work, though related practices may be included only as supplementary material.
Disallowed primary media (examples)
Sculpture, collage, printmaking, anime, animation, graphic design, illustration, fashion design, and photography do not meet the qualifications for this award as primary submissions.
Awards and committee authority
- Award amounts vary each year, ranging from $500 to $5,000 per recipient.
- At the Committee’s discretion, payments may be made in quarterly installments.
- The Committee may allocate funds in whole or in part based on its assessment of applicants’ merits as demonstrated by submitted work and personal information; its decisions are final.
- The Committee also reserves the right to withhold awards if the submitted work does not meet the required standard or is judged to be of inferior quality.
Application materials
The online application will require a statement of your goals and plans and up to six examples of paintings or drawings for evaluation. Suggested subject categories (you do not need to supply examples from each) include:
1. Painting from life
2. Drawing from the figure (nude)
3. Composition
4. Landscape
5. Any other work you consider appropriate
Use of funds and reporting
Recipients are free to apply the scholarship to further their art education along conservative/classical lines, though the Committee may offer recommendations. Each awardee must submit a brief quarterly report including digital images of current work, and a more detailed final report at the conclusion of the scholarship period.
Deadlines and notification
- Applications accepted annually from October 1 through February 1 (inclusive).
- Applicants will be notified by email in early April.
- Checks to winners will be mailed in May.
